The Trans Bay Cable (TBC) is a 53-mile, 400-MW submarine high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line, owned by an affiliate of SteelRiver Infrastructure Partners and located beneath San Francisco bay. TBC is the first purely privately-developed and financed solution to meet the reliability needs of a regional utility grid in the United States and a critical component of the San Francisco area's electricity infrastructure. TBC successfully commenced commercial operations in November 2010, delivering up to 40% of the city's electricity demand, reducing the need for unpopular in-city generation and load-shedding, and increasing overall system reliability by relieving grid congestion.
The Trans Bay Cable provides a new source of power for the city of San Francisco, helping to lower long-term energy costs and provide transmission reliability for the entire Bay area. The transmission line receives regulated revenues under a formula set by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. This reflects a return on investment in its construction costs and capital expenditures, and reimbursement for operating costs.
